{"id":1218,"date":"2019-12-21T09:00:51","date_gmt":"2019-12-21T13:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/faggotz.org\/wp?p=1218"},"modified":"2025-01-19T18:47:13","modified_gmt":"2025-01-19T22:47:13","slug":"winter-updates-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/faggotz.org\/wp\/2019\/12\/winter-updates-8\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter Updates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I&#8217;ve begun doing one-on-one in-person interviews with past contributors to the 1990-1991 cable-access community television show <a href=\"https:\/\/counterarchive.ca\/case-studies\/activist-media-and-toronto-living-aids-1980\"><em>Toronto Living With AIDS<\/em><\/a> as part of my book research. So far I&#8217;ve spoken with <a href=\"https:\/\/ampd.yorku.ca\/profile\/john-greyson\/\">John Greyson<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardfung.ca\/\">Richard Fung<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vtape.org\/artist?ai=73\">Kaspar Saxena<\/a>. I&#8217;m setting up interviews with other contributors for the spring and I&#8217;ve already ransacked the organizational archives of Vtape and Trinity Square Video. I&#8217;m hopeful about publishing a definitive history of the series some time in 2020.\u00a0 There&#8217;s also talk, through the Archive\/Counter-Archive project of launching some sort of <em>Toronto Living with HIV\/AIDS <\/em>series reboot in 2020.\u00a0 Stay tuned!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1224 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/faggotz.org\/wpwp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ourbodiesourbusiness-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/faggotz.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ourbodiesourbusiness-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/faggotz.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ourbodiesourbusiness-1024x769.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/faggotz.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ourbodiesourbusiness-768x577.jpg 768w, https:\/\/faggotz.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ourbodiesourbusiness-1536x1154.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/faggotz.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ourbodiesourbusiness.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This coming semester I&#8217;ll be guest lecturing at Brock University in Dr. <a href=\"http:\/\/caitlin-press.com\/our-authors\/emma-mckenna\/\">Emma McKenna<\/a>&#8216;s labour studies course focusing on sex work\/ers.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll be doing a lecture on the crossover between queer, sex worker, and HIV\/AIDS activism in Canada, focusing in particular on the work of the <a href=\"https:\/\/aidsactivisthistory.omeka.net\/items\/browse?tags=Prostitutes+Safe+Sex+Project\">Prostitutes&#8217; Safe Sex Project<\/a> and under-recognized activist <a href=\"https:\/\/walnet.org\/97_walnut\/danny_cockerline\/?fbclid=IwAR0pJvBTVpYUe10QCV-E477H4aWFLS_LjY93TK-2xZZfPEPekMWk0dMkkrE\">Danny Cockerline<\/a>. I&#8217;ll be teaching Andy Sorfleet&#8217;s writing (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nakedtruth.ca\/2018\/02\/busting-sex-work-stigma-you-cant-catch.html\">Busting Sex Work Stigma: You Can&#8217;t Catch HIV from Money<\/a>) and screening George Stamos&#8217; brilliant short doc <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/195574653\"><em>Our Bodies Our Business<\/em><\/a> (2016) on sex worker activism at the Montreal International AIDS conference in 1989. Video still of Danny and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada_(AG)_v_Bedford#Valerie_Scott\">Valerie Scott<\/a> from\u00a0<em>OBOB<\/em> to the right.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After launching the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.powerottawa.ca\/research-repository\/\">Research Repository<\/a> (RR) with POWER folks this fall, I&#8217;m working on a systematic review of sex work research in\/on Canada since <em><a href=\"https:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/annualstatutes\/2014_25\/page-1.html\">PEPCA<\/a> <\/em>in December 2014<em>. <\/em>I&#8217;m interested to see what kind of research is being done, by whom, and to what ends. As sex workers are one of the most over-surveilled, overly criminalized, and misunderstood group of people, the type of research being done has the potential of fuelling already devastating social policy and further entrench various long-held stigmas. Other writing projects will likely come out of the RR committee of POWER after we meet early in the new year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My review of Malynnda Johnson&#8217;s 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/rowman.com\/ISBN\/9781498547260\/HIV-on-TV-Popular-Culture's-Epidemic\"><em>HIV on TV<\/em> <\/a>book review should be out any day now in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utpjournals.press\/loi\/cjfs\/\"><em>Canadian Journal of Film Studies<\/em><\/a> (Vol. 28, No. 2).\u00a0 While the book is worth checking out, my review points out a few epistemological gaps worth further investigation.\u00a0 The book is prohibitively expensive, so definitely encourage your library to order a copy if you&#8217;re interested.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve begun doing one-on-one in-person interviews with past contributors to the 1990-1991 cable-access community television show Toronto Living With AIDS as part of my book research.
