project description: O Canada: HIV Not Welcome Here pairs a historical political map of pre-confederation Canada with bold text challenging the exclusion of HIV-positive immigrants from present-day Canada. This piece confronts the immigration policies of a settler-colonial state founded on the genocide of first nations people who continue to bear a disproportionate burden of the ongoing AIDS crisis in Canada, and the explicit continued exclusion of “undesirable” immigrants. Canada lags behind the rest of North America (and most of Europe) by continuing to ban HIV-positive people from immigrating to the country. HIV travel and residency restrictions perpetuate stigma and legalize discrimination against a group of people based on serostatus. While the Trudeau government is lauded worldwide for its welcoming of immigrants and refugees, this racist, homophobic, and abelist policy of exclusion continues.
